Swing Bike
Colins Swing Bike
Concept
Swing bikes have been around for a long time, but recently my friend Colin created his own version, integrating the rear steerer into the seat tube. I sought to iterate on this design, but with a smaller 20in wheel in back.
My swing bike design, featuring a smaller rear wheel and shorter chainstay length
Front parallelogram in a 3D printed jig
Fully Welded front with a jig piece stuck inside... oops
CNC machined head tube badge, brazed on to the front head tube
3D printed jig for mitering the seat stays
Primo seat stay fitup
Rear Triangle in the Anvil Jig
If I had a nickel for every time I welded a steerer tube extension...
I did the powder coating for this frame myself. The results were pretty lackluster. Doing it myself made me appreciate the work that professional powder coaters do. The sand blasting, cleaning, outgassing, masking, and powder application is a pretty challenging processing for something like a bike.
Assembly in progress
The shortened chainstays make this thing super nimble and responsive, perhaps too much so. It definently is less stable than other swing bike iterations of this design, but is much more sensitive and capable in low speed swinging
